Laser Capture Microdissection

A Zeiss laser capture microdissection system is available for extracting cells or other regions-of-interest from tissue sections.  Sample preparation usually consists of fixed or frozen tissue sections placed on specialized microscope slides.  Particular cells, groups of cells, or other features are encircled on the screen by the researcher, and automatically cut out and catapulted into an Eppendorf tube by a pulsed UV laser.  This system can also be used for other thin specimens (~10 um thick), such as live attached cells or specialized films.  Further analysis typically requires thousands of cells and can be carried out in our Genomics and Proteomics facilities.  After an individual training and consultation session (contact), researchers are given access to schedule instrument time
