Terms and Policies

All BRC core facilities operate under University Policy 3.10, Recharge Operations and Service Facilities.

Acknowledgment and Authorship

CAT: Work supported through Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) grants should include the following acknowledgement:
The work was partially supported through a Cornell University Institute of Biotechnology’s Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) grant, funded through New York State Division of Science, Technology, and Innovation (NYSTAR): NYS contract C150124.

BRC Core Facilities: Researchers should acknowledge the Cornell University of Biotechnology in all publications and grant applications that are enabled by BRC core facilities' resources and services or include contributions by BRC core facility directors or staff. Acknowledgement is important even when using "commodity" services such as computing hours, storage or routine DNA sequencing because the university invests money to support these facilities.  Proper citations show the impact of these investments and help ensure the sustainability of these resources.

Example acknowledgement language:

  • Sequencing was performed by the Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC)'s Genomics Facility at the Cornell University's Institute of Biotechnology (http://www.biotech.cornell.edu/brc/genomics-facility).
  • We thank P. Schweitzer and the BRC Genomics Facility at Cornell’s Institute of Biotechnology for sequencing experiments.
  • We thank the Genomics Facility of the Biotechnology Resource Center at the Cornell University’s Institute of Biotechnology for their help with sequencing experiments.

Include BRC core directors or staff as co-authors when they provide a significant intellectual contribution to the published research.  Include BRC core directors or staff as co-PI or co-investigators in grant applications when they provide a significant contribution to the grant proposal and scientific/intellectual leadership for the proposed work.  Please follow these guidelines:

If you have concerns such as being unable to create a purchase order, please contact BRC_payment@cornell.edu

When paying an invoice against a purchase order:

Payment due date and late notices:  Payment is due net 30 days from the invoice date.  We will send late notices at 60 days and every 30 days thereafter.  At 90 days, our accounts receivable department will contact the institution's accounts payable and inform them that the core users whose invoices have not been paid will be denied service until the account is settled.  We will also contact the affected core users directly.  At 120 days, we will refuse service to anyone from the core users' Cornell department or external institution, whichever applies, until the account is settled. We will inform accounts payable and all of the core users from that Cornell department or external institution, whichever applies, of this situation.

BRC core facility directors may be asked to become involved in working with the core user towards resolution of any unresolved billing discrepancies.

Internal versus external pricing

The status of a core user in regards to external versus internal pricing is based on the funding source of their payment.  Payments made with funds sourced from the following Cornell University academic units and associated institutions are considered internal to Cornell University:

  • Cornell University (Ithaca, NY, and Geneva, NY)
  • Weill Cornell Medicine (NYC, NY, and Doha, Qatar)
  • Cornell Tech (NYC, NY)
  • Burke Neurological Institute (WCM Affiliate)
  • Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research (BTI; Cornell Affiliate))
  • USDA-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) (units in Ithaca, NY, and Geneva, NY are Cornell Affiliates)

Data Retention

Data generated by the BRC is made available to the core user for a minimum of 30 days.  Except as noted elsewhere for specific facilties and services, storage and backup of the core users' data is the core users' responsibility as soon as the data is provided to the user.  Beyond 30 days, any data still stored by any BRC core may be retrieved by request for an additional fee. No guarantee is made about the availability of data after 30 days.  Facility users who wish to discuss data retention and management options are encouraged to contact our Bioinformatics facility at BRC_bioinformatics@cornell.edu

Data Return Time

Turnaround time (data return time) is extremely important.  Our goal is to provide high quality results in the shortest possible time.  We routinely track the time between sample submission and data return.  For this purpose, turnaround time is defined as the number of days between the day the sample is checked in and the day the results are returned (e.g., posted on our website).  Samples are considered checked in only after an order, samples and valid payment information have been received (see our payment policy above).  Only business days (Monday through Friday) are included in our calculation.  To discuss the turnaround time you can expect when submitting samples, please contact us.
